Five-day-design-event during the Dutch Design Week 2009
Period: March until October
Organization in collaboration with: Studium Generale, study association Industrial Design LUCID, the Dutch Fablabs, Premsela, Waag Society and Creative Commons
Exhibition design in collaboration with: Featuring (featuring-amsterdam.nl)
From March until October 2009 I joined the organization of the Designlab. The Designlab takes place during the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven and is an event of five days with lectures, workshops, performances, a design contest, an exposition, food design, and music, organized by Studium Generale and Industrial Design students. Central to the programme of the Designlab were the tangent planes of design with other disciplines (media, art and science). The Gaslab, an old lab of the chemistry faculty of the Technical University in Eindhoven, was transformed into a unique design studio, where you are inspired during the evening by the work and stories of designers, artists and scientists and you can design your own creations within the workshops during the day. Apart from the the evening program and the workshops, there were a number of design tools that allowed you to make things yourself. You could make your own LED Throwie, Bristle Bot or hack a design of the (UN) LIMITED Design Contest in the Fablab.
My duties included developing the concept of the Designlab as a whole and organizing the different events within a team of eight members. My personal tasks included the design for a low-cost interior and the design of the promotional material and visual identity of the Designlab.
Premsela and Waag Society organized, in collaboration with Fablab, the (UN)LIMITED Design Contest. The contributing designs of this contest were exposed in the Designlab. In cooperation with Premsela, the Waag and Featuring, a design for a low-cost exposition was made. Because the Gaslab is a small building, the lack of space was solved by a compact and mobile exposition. The exposition is a construction made of metal pipes, in which the designs are being suspended. The installation can be hoisted up to the ceiling if more space is desired, for example during the party. This way, the exposition will still be visible from the first floor.
